What Happens After You Let Go: The Context Wall

When you stop guiding step by step, the Agent starts running autonomously in its agentic loop. It reads the spec, reasons about the first action, calls a tool, observes the result, reasons about the next step, and continues acting. The results of each loop iteration are appended to the context window.

The first 20 iterations go fine. The Agent's reasoning is clear, output quality is stable. By iteration 50, the context window is packed with dozens of iterations' worth of reasoning traces, tool call records, and code snippets. Early design decisions have been pushed to the far end of the window, receiving ever-decreasing attention weights. By iteration 100, the Agent's behavior starts becoming unpredictable. The error handling strategy it chose in the first half gets replaced by a different approach in the second half. The interface specification it defined at iteration 20 gets silently altered in the implementation at iteration 80.

This is the context wall. The decline in output quality is not linear; there is a cliff. Before the cliff, the Agent performs normally. Beyond the cliff, output quality degrades sharply, and this degradation is silent. The Agent will not tell you "I am starting to make mistakes." It will continue producing output with the same confidence, except the content starts contradicting itself.

This is not the Agent getting dumber. This is the hard constraint of limited processing capacity. As analyzed in Chapter 1, the Agent reconstructs its understanding within a finite window in every interaction; it has no persistent mental model to maintain global consistency. When the amount of information in the window exceeds effective processing capacity, what gets lost is the information that entered the window earliest, and that information is often the most important: the overall architecture, design principles, and interface conventions.

With this mechanism understood, the response strategy becomes clear: do not try to have the Agent complete the entire task in one go. Instead, cut the task into chunks that can be finished before hitting the cliff.
